what is a midwife

Midwifery is a growing and dynamic profession in Canada, providing care along your pregnancy journey. Midwives are health professionals who will be there to help you before, during and after birth.

Primary Maternity Care Providers

Midwives provide complete care during pregnancy, including regular visits, diagnostic tests, routine bloodwork, and emotional support.  At Sol Midwifery antenatal visits begin at 8 weeks of pregnancy, occur every 4-6 weeks until 30 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 38 weeks, then every week until birth. Families receive 3-4 home visits in the first week and 2 week and 6 week clinic appointments (more as needed).

  • In Partnership

Midwives work in partnership with you and your loved ones when you are pregnant providing support in a non-authoritarian way that respects your needs and experiences.

  • Evidence Based Care

Midwifery practice is informed by research, evidence-based guidelines, clinical experience and the unique values and needs of those in their care.

  • On Call 24 Hours

There will always be a midwife who is on call when you have a question, concern, or when labour starts.

Savanna Boyle RM

Solo Midwife

Over my career to date (7 years of Full Time Practice) I have valued and loved working as a Solo Practitioner and Member of a Team. Both bring depth and meaning to the work I am blessed to be doing. Solo Practice serves to remind me why I became a Midwife.

Like many Midwives I was drawn to birth from as far back as I can remember.  My first birth, a baby calf with my Big Sister Noreen. I thought I would pursue Medicine until a Canada World Youth Exchange program to Benin, Africa changed everything.

My counterpart whom I was instantly bonded was pregnant. I loved and protected her like a Mama Bear. My host Mother in Benin also happened to be a Nurse-Midwife.  It wasn't until almost a year after my return to Canada I discovered Midwifery was an option.

It is a true honour to serve Mothers and Families during this pivotal time in their lives. Walking alongside as consultant, guide and advocate.

When asked where I am from I do not have a straight answer. I was born in the Yukon, raised in Whitehorse, Smithers, Williams Lake and Nanaimo before adventuring across Oceans, trained in Ontario, practiced in Alberta and now back to the Coast with my Family.

I believe it matters how we welcome the next generation into the World.
